Free! (info)
Summary: Haruka Nanase and his friends start a swimming club in their school in hopes of reuniting with their old friend, Rin Matsuoka.
Art: This is the reason I picked this anime up in my watchlist! The backgrounds are just so appealing and pretty. The characters are drawn so nicely. It's so fun when you see them with no shirts! LOL. My issue, which is very small is sometimes their shoulders are so wide. Like, one time Makoto was 5 heads wide!
Story: The story isn't exactly that most original you could find but the pacing is perfect for you to understand.
Characters: They're pretty generic and you can immediately identify the stereotypes. Although, Kyoto Animation gives one extra step to have them break the stereotype a little bit. One of the best aspects of this series is the characters' interactions.
Animation: I was not disappointed with this. It was so smooth and beautiful. When they move it is so fluid and not choppy. A great example is when Rin kicks a trashcan, it was just lovely! Best animation for me in the season.
Do I recommend it? Yes, especially if you just watched a really heavy series. It's refreshing as water.
Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou (info)
Summary: The antics of a best-selling and sadistic author and a human boy reincarnated into a dog who loves her books.
Art: I can say it's above average. It's quite generic and not quite eye-catching to me. The backgrounds are great and better than the art of characters themselves. I feel the lines are pretty dull. I really wish it was crisper.
Story: Honestly, it was all over the place. This anime had such a great start! Unfortunately it wasn't as focused I expected it to be. My expectation from the first episode itself was this dog and girl would have detective adventures with comedy. There were a few episodes that I really liked, but then they jumped to another story and not adding enough serious into the comedy into the end. Believe me, as it says on MAL's database; Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou can be really absurd, that you begin feeling the absurd is dragging so much it begins to be bad.
Characters: The characters are basically coloured slabs (coloured to easily identify the stereotype) with little denting. I think they all overreact, honestly and I don't really find it funny when it begins to continue on and on and on. They don't feel very realistic and again, they are quite absurd characters. I also was bothered that there was one character who barely appeared in the series and she wasn't focused. I don't think it was necessary to add that character in if you're not going to have us get to know her. I did get a few laughs from them.
Animation: Not very good. I thought it was rather sloppy and when there is some perspective for a action scene is necessary, the movement and the placement just looked ridiculous. I'd say this anime in the whole list of my summer 2013 anime would be in last place in the animation category.
Do I recommend it? No. That is if you're looking to watch for good anime. This is mediocre in my tastes and if you don't mind and you want to try something...something, well, be my guest!
Kami Nomi Zo Shiru Sekai : Megami-hen (info)
Summary: Keima Katsuragi, the God of Conquest has to conquer his old conquests again to awaken the Jupiter Sisters. Or else Vintage, a group of Old Hell Devils will kill them and take over New Hell.
Art: It is so cute! The characters have moe feel to it so they have bigger than average heads and eyes. Although they still look very lovely. I dig the shading style and colour contrasts. Well, the backgrounds are great too. The style had been always consistent for the past 3 seasons.
Story: The anime's plot stayed faithful to the original manga storyline with a few tweaks. It was incredible how they could pace the anime perfectly for a story that took place for only 1 week. There were really interesting parts and it was cool!
Characters: Some of the female characters are in fact from the typical moe stereotypes shelf. But guess what? They have some depth! I like that they have the characters react to these 'out of this world' situations without overreacting too much. Keima definitely got some character development here as he realizes how he affects these girls.
Animation: It's just right and not that choppy. I feel that the studio saved up more money for the last episode because the brief fight scene where Haqua and Lune clash blades, it was so fluid and beautiful!
Do I recommend it? Yes! But you may have to watch the last 2 seasons and the 3 OVAs to get the full experience. I'm guessing the small requirement before you watch Megami-hen is that you watch Tenri-hen first (which is 2 OVAs long)!
Servant x Service (info)
Summary: The everyday life of civil servants.
Art: It's not the most remarkable and amazing style but it fits just perfectly for this kind of anime. It has really cute and comforting colours.
Story: As it's a slice of life, it doesn't have an epic story or anything. It feels like real-life so I enjoyed that.
Characters: The interactions of each character's flawed personalities results in this funny and light-hearted anime. A moderate amount of character progress is shown as well. I think they just feel like normal humans and I like that!
Animation: Good animation. For an anime that doesn't have any action scenes I'd say that the animation is pretty good.
Do I recommend it? Yes. If you like slice of life anime, give this a try! It's not that boring!
Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! (info)
SPOILER! Tomoko gets friends!
Summary: The high school life of Kuroki Tomoko, an anti-social otaku who blames the outgoing society for the fact that she is not popular.
Art: Nothing else to say other than it's perfectly fit for this anime. It's a funny and cute style. The random edges of colour in the backgrounds actually give a bit of a colourful vibe to Tomoko's lonely life.
Story: I think it's a really funny story. How such ordinary situations warp into crazy ones all because Tomoko's imagination. The mini-arcs are great and they are so relatable.
Characters: The focus is mainly on Tomoko herself. Tomoko is a nicely written character and represents us through our embarassing times, mostly with social interaction. She is very flawed and the anime is able to bring out her bad sides and good sides. The supporting characters are really relatable, too.
Animation: It's all good.
Just kidding.てへ!
Do I recommend it? Yes, definitely! It's funny, cringeworthy and true!
That's it. Only one anime I felt a little disappointed about. The rest of them are great anime and they're not bad at all! Thanks for reading and let's look forward to the Fall 2013 anime season!
